Are you still on a turkey hangover? I know I am! The end of Thanksgiving marks the transition from fall to winter for me. Once the turkey feast is over, I’m ready to put away my orange and brown decorations and haul out the red and green. Our house makes an amazing transformation on Black Friday. For me, Black Friday is not about shopping; it’s about putting up the tree, decorating the house and enjoying a hot Tom and Jerry.
I’m not sure if Tom and Jerry’s are more of a Midwest thing or if they’re nationwide, but it seems everyone in the Midwest drinks them. Probably because we have nothing better to do than come up with tasty alcoholic creations when there’s a blizzard and it’s -20 degrees ! I remember my parents drinking Tom and Jerry’s when I was a kid. As we often do, I followed my parents’ tradition of buying pre-made mix at the grocery store. GROSS. ICK. YUCK.
Based on the ingredients, I knew these hot toddies should taste way better than that! I embarked on my own quest to come up with the perfect Tom and Jerry batter. Lucky for you, I’ve done all the trial and error for you! All you need to do is whip it up! The process is slightly tedious but the payoff is HUGE. It only takes about 20 minutes to make the batter but it creates a lot of dirty bowls in the process. I promise you, it’s worth it though. It yields at least enough batter for 40 drinks.
Invite your friends. Invite the neighbors. Make some memories.
Here’s the cast of characters:
First, you’re going to need three large bowls. Separate the egg yolks from the egg whites. Place the egg yolks in one bowl and the egg whites in another.
Add softened or room temperature butter and powdered sugar to the third bowl.
Alright, now that our bowls are set, let’s go back to the egg whites. Add 1/2 teaspoon salt to the egg whites. Beat egg whites and salt until foamy and stiff peaks form. When you pick up your wisk or blender, the peak should hold it’s shape and not fall. I like to use my stand mixer for this (it takes about 2 minutes in my stand mixer). I you don’t have a stand mixer, this NEEDS to be on your Christmas list. I don’t know how I’d survive in the kitchen without it!
Ok, set the egg whites aside for now. Let’s move on to the bowl of egg yolks. Whip these until soft peaks form. That means you’ll get a peak when you pull out your whisk or blender but it will fold over on itself. This takes longer to achieve than stiff peaks with the egg whites.
Moving on to the bowl of butter and powdered sugar. Beat this bowl until the mixture is light and airy (fluffy). If your butter isn’t quite soft enough, turn your oven on and let it sit in the heating oven for a few minutes. Make sure it’s an oven safe bowl though!
Ok, now add vanilla and egg yolks to the bowl of whipped butter and sugar. Mix well.
Now it’s time to add the spices that make this a drink a true treat! Add cloves, cinnamon, allspice and nutmeg to the butter/sugar mixture and stir well to combine.
Now, grab that bowl of egg whites that’s been hanging out off to the side. Gently fold the egg whites into the butter/sugar mixture until well combined.
You can store this in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks but I highly recommend freezing it. Unless you plan to have a party, you probably won’t go through 40 drinks in 2 weeks! You can keep this in the freezer for several months.
To make a Tom and Jerry, fill a mug about 2/3 full with hot milk. Some people use water here but I think that’s just silly. Why water down the flavor? Trust me, you’ll be much happier if you use milk. It comes out nice and creamy. Add one shot of brandy or spiced rum. Personally, I prefer brandy even though I’m not a brandy drinker. Take 1 -2 heaping tablespoons of your Tom and Jerry batter and add to mug. Stir until foam begins to form on the top. Sprinkle with a dash of cinnamon or nutmeg. Not because it needs the flavor but because it’s pretty!
My kids came in from sledding JUST as I finished making this! Perfect timing on their part!
Now get back to putting up that tree! Happy Holidays!
